Summer 07 Oxalis Update
August 26th, 2007Summer 2007 has been a difficult time for my oxalis. Its been discouraging to say the least. A neighbor purchased many new plants including all types of various summer ornamental perennials which imported all types of aphids on to my plants. Everyone has a right to have plants on they’re space just as I have a right to grow my Oxalis. Its just a disappointing situation. And there are big green ones, small black ones all shapes and sizes. They really suck the blood out of especially new growth. They’re also spider mites which were erradicated.
In NYC, we had very hot temperatures of 90 deg F and greated almost every day from the second week of July till the third week in August. Its even hot again today. The summer growing woodland Oxalis can not tolerate all this heat. Forget about the South African collection. It was my mistake to plant many of the Flavas in early July (Before the heat). But they also have been stressed secondary to the heat. I have been spoiled over the past two summers with temps rarely over 85 deg F. with good Flava growth all summer long. The Aplines which are year round tenants also suffered greatly by both pests and the heat. I can keep the plants from getting too cold in the winter, but I am unable to keep the plants from getting too hot in the summer. now i have to battle the Aphid situation over the next two months to prevent an out of control situation when I have to close the cold frame for the winter. I will try to post some new photos soon. One bright spot is Monicas Oxalis Acetocella that grew in Demark not far from Monica lives. It has no problems with the heat and the aphids never look at it. After several months now I have a full pot growing. Its even giving off seed! Ah if only all my Oxalis were so lucky!
